There’s this Peter Gabriel song called “I grieve”, and it’s a bummer of a song.
It’s long, the writer was clearly dealing with death and he was staring at the concept.
Totally human.
Just something humans do.
But there’s this turn at the end, with only a minute and a half remaining, where,,, it turns into a completely different song.
Rhythm changes, inflection and stance change,,,
It’s like, after thinking about death, deeply, the writer ended up in this place.
“Life carries on,,
In all the dogs and cats,,
In the flies and rats….
In the rod and the rust,,
In the ashes and the dust”
So brilliant. It’s like you’re witnessing emotional growth during the coarse of a song.
“It’s just the car we ride in…
The home we reside in…
The face that we hide in..
The way we are tied in”
This is the same guy that did Shock the Monkey…
The song ,,, is one of the best contemplations of death I’ve seen.
ANd it is a drag, not gonna lie, the first half is painful, it’s the kind of thing you need to listen to when someone you love dies,,
But the way he exits the song,,
So good, Legend.
Even with no fucking song at all, even with all the notes removed, you could stack the sentences that he chose, and you could derive value from it.
That’s what a Legend is to me.
